Natura e morte al tempo della guerra secondo Lawrence

Abstract

Mentre la propaganda pubblicizzava la Grande Guerra come una lotta metafisica contro il Male, l’evento epocale parve ben presto per gli inglesi un presagio della morte della civiltà occidentale. Immagini di morte ricorrono ossessivamente nel racconto “England, my England” di D. H. Lawrence. La morte di Egbert rappresenta la morte della Vecchia Inghilterra, legata ai ritmi della natura e alla civiltà dei cottages, ma anche il fallimento degli intellettuali, incapaci di creare un linguaggio del dissenso che possa sfidare la propaganda. In chiusa, la campagna è abbandonata da tutti i personaggi, turbata dall’azione delle macchine di guerra ed Egbert muore.
