“…so much immortal wealth”: Life in the Sick-Room by Harriet Martineau as Eco-Sustainable Narrative

Abstract

Questo studio propone una lettura in chiave eco-critica di Life in the Sick-Room di Harriet Martineau (1844). Scritto apartire da un’esperienza personale dell’autrice, il volume si configura come trattato normativo sulla condizione dell’invalido in epoca vittoriana, e di fatto contribuì notevolmente al dibattito sulla riforma della professione medica e del sistema sanitario inglese del tempo. Martineau non ambisce a trasmettere un messaggio ecosostenibile, e tuttavia la sua concezione di natura in quanto funzionale alla salute fisica e spirituale del lettore riflette i valori promossi da disciplinerecenti quali i Green Studies e i Partnership Studies.
