Conceived as the first novel in a trilogy, Tokyo Year Zero (2007) portrays Japan in 1946, defeated by the Allies and invaded by the American occupying forces. The investigation concerning the murders of four prostitutes develops on this backdrop describing a nation that has willingly decided to lose its identity. In this light, my work here revises the notion of empire and the way it has changed in recent years, considering how Said’s reflections on the idea of the Orient have developed so far and are remoulded in the narrative of David Peace.
