Tradurre i margini: V.S. Naipaul in italiano - Borders, identity and the question in Australia
Abstract
To what extent is the translator at liberty to make a deliberate choice between ‘foreignizing’ and ‘domesticating’ strategies? How much does the publishing industry interfere with the final version of a translation? Editors and publishers are often very conservative and do not accept adequate and innovative translation strategies; there is a general tendency not to give unconditional hospitality to the Foreign. Is it possible to critically resist the translation policy imposed by the publishing industry? These issues will be dealt with by examining some passages of V.S. Naipaul’s Miguel Street (1959) and their possible translation into Italian.
